The Safari Editor’s Best Picks | Elerai Camp & Conservancy

In under 30 minutes after arrival at Elerai Camp previously known as Satao Elerai, we watched in awe as a huuuge beautiful Elephant drank from the waterhole just below the lounge area along with spec-tacular views over the Amboseli plains and the major highlight was a blazing ball of fire setting over the swimming pool… Pure magic!! Well Mt. Kilimanjaro was abit shy at this hour but it was still slightly visible

Why Elerai Camp??

Great Food… When you plan your Safari to Amboseli, come hungry for not only great game viewing experiences but also to fill up your stomach with mouth watering bites.

Endless game viewing opportunities.. Whether you set out to the conservancy or sit on the lounge area, you are going to have a great time watching some of the members of the Big 5 drink from the waterhole below. Some of the wild animals you might be lucky to spot include; the African Elephant, giraffes, Zebras, Buffaloes and the Impala. The lodge rooms are are a great way to watch all these from the comfort of your bed, when you book your Safari request to stay in Cottage #1 if it’s not already occupied by the time of your visit ๐Ÿ˜Š

Friendly staff… From the moment you walk in, you feel right at home and everyone treats each other just like family! It’s no place you’d feel homesick.

Breathtaking views.. The major highlight is spectacular views of the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro, pssssst if you fancy amazing views of the Mountain book the tents as this gives you access to views for days! And if you fancy endless game viewing right from your shower take the lodge rooms which face the plains

Other Activities include;

Use of the swimming pool

Fun fact: this pool overlooks a waterhole from where Eles drink from very oftenly, quite a show isn’t it!

You’re going to the bush but please remember to pack your swim suit, you may choose to take a dip in the evening to cool off the heat and most importantly the swimming pool overlooks the waterhole (we already know elephants come here more often for their water) This is a great way to enjoy a Magarita as you watch the Eles wallow and send the Zebras off!

Bush walks… The Maasai warriors are happy to take you on a guided bush walk as they share bush secrets with you. This is their backyard and they have lived here all their lives, perfect guides for this kind of adventure

Sundowners…What better way to watch the African sun go down than with a Gin & tonic in hand overlooking the blazing ball of fire set across the Amboseli plains.

The Safari Editor’s Best Picks| The Last Village Lodge

A bit of Country, A bit of Luxury

Located in Athi River – The last village or ” Makuti” as the locals refer to it is my most recent favourite favourite lodge, if you are looking for a family friendly hideaway, a Sunday afternoon chillspot with the girls, an escape with your partner away from the kids,a weekend plot with the boys, teambonding with your colleagues or perhaps looking for the parfait spot for your birthday/graduation and even for your garden wedding this is the place for you!!

This charming, rustic and a superbly spacious Swahili style lodge, is exquisitely located in Lukenya promising fantastic views over the remarkable hills. I particulary looove love the cozy and homely atmosphere around here, from the moment you walk in you feel right at home, the attentive and personalized service you are accorded is out of this world. There’s something about breathing fresh air when you are on the country side and I particularly love their conservation efforts – the lodge runs on solar power you guys -:)

Why the Last Village, you ask…..

Food… my heart feels at home where there is great food. It was cooked to order fresh and delectable, the salad was tasty. I will definitely go back for that Mbuzi and you should too.

Delightful staff.… The staff are super friendly and their customer service skills are IMPECCABLE!!

A kids friendly lodge…uniquely equipped with a kids play ground with so many activities the kids can indulge in as you the parents have a good time.

What to do?

Quad biking – I highly recommend quadbiking for a truly memorable and an unforgettable experience, whats more exciting is that you don’t have to be an experienced biker, jump right on and explore 2.5km of the village with nothing infront of you. Kids have not been left out, you will also find mini-quad bikes for them.

Swimming – No, the swimming isn’t heated because “who needs a heated pool in the Eastern side”, when God has done the magic of a close to 24hr solar heat?? The pool is a perfect spot for that afternoon tranquility.

Ziplining – This is the latest and one of my favourite addition in the lodge. For the adrenaline charged experience you might want try this, it’s a must try if you havent already.

Archery – I missed the target thrice….three times, bows and the arrows will be right there, learn a new skill, a friend did mention that archery is one of the many ways of boosting confidence,I don’t know how true that is but we can find out at The Last Village…

It doesnt all end in the outdoors, after all the adrenaline rush and excitement you will experience a bunch of other indoor activites from play station , playing chess to the pool table and darts borads.

The Mindful Traveler 2/2

In the recent past Eco travel, Eco tourism, Eco friendly, Eco tourists, Eco conscious and all the ECO jargon you can think of have been perfect catchphrases anyone can slap around to look better. Hotel operators, tour operators, Marketers and other investors always throw it around to sound “GREEN” and travellers have not been left out, theoretically are great and amazing Eco traveller’s, it is rather incredibly SIMPLE. However, in practice it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Being Eco-conscious is simply making educated decisions that are good for you, the people around you and the place we all call HOME๐ŸŒ – the Planet.

On our second part of the ECO conscious traveller series we suggest a few fips to aid your Eco travels when you set out to your next vacation or staycation.

Treat your hotel as if it were your HOME

A great way to kick of your journey of becoming a more Eco conscious traveler is by feeling at home in your hotel accommodation, by doing simple yet meaningful and fruitful acts such as hanging your towels so they don’t have to be changed on daily basis, taking quick showers and turning off TV, lights and aircon everytime you leave.

Every drop counts

Reduce the amount of water wasted by turning off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing your hands and remember always take quick showers

Reuse hotel towels

Hang up your towels to indicate that you’re happy to reuse them and avoid getting clean towels unnecessary just as you would back home.

Responsibly use electricity /heating and cooling

You don’t leave your lights on at your house when you leave for work now do you? Always turn off the the lights, TV and aircon as you would at home

Our words have power but our actions shape our lives.

An eye-to-eye encounter with wildlife in the city | Wildlife Marvels

Until you can get up close and personal with wildlife we are serving you a virtual- urban safari, explore Nairobi National Park through this article that we have with so much love put together just for you. You have probably heard or read this fact a thousand times but I’m going to say it anyway, Nairobi National Park or otherwise known as “the world’s wildlife capital” is the only one on the planet in close proximity to a city centre!

Fact two which you might have not heard is that the park is home to all the Big 5 except the African Elephant.

Visiting the park is a great way to reconnect with nature, rejuvenate & recharge or simply create a lifetime of memories with your loved ones or make new friends whilst on your game drive.

Why Nairobi National Park?

The views…the first thing you will notice is the magnificent backdrop of the city skyscrapers!! amazing, right?? A picture here is definitely insta-worthy or postcard-worthy.

Game viewing …. whilst on your game drive be sure to spot some of the members of the big five including; the buffalo, rhinos, if you are early enough you might be lucky enough to meet the lions and leopards. We highly recommend going on the 6:00 Am game drive, this is the best time to encounter the big cats.

You will also meet the giraffes towering the acacia trees and zebras crossing to lots of antelopes running around the open grass plains of the park.

The resident crocodile & hippos… The resident crocodile will be relaxing just by the water hole where you will also spot the hippos popping up. You can stop over here for a while and your guide is happy to tell you more about the crocodile and hippos.

Picnicking…There are designated picnic sites where you can have your meal, enjoy the serenity and have a great time in an open space!!

Accommodation options within the park?

Nairobi is also used as a jumping-off point for safaris elsewhere in Kenya and if you wish to stay for a night or two here are some options for you within the park and/or just a stone throw away from the park.

Black and white Rhinos

Raise up both your hands if you believe a Rhino is just a Rhino , I mean a Rhino is a Rhino. Okay, I will go first. All through my childhood I have always believed there is only one species of a Rhino, just a RHINO, But jokes on me, jokes on me guys.

It’s up until recently, few days to World Rhino Day to be precise which is Celebrated annually o the 22nd of September in honor of these enormous creatures in our protected areas and private sanctuaries and Luckily, the theme for this year was “๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐‘น๐’‰๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐‘ญ๐’๐’“๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’“” and to feed my curiosity I went on to discover and learn more about the existing Rhino Species and so here we are ๐Ÿ˜Š

The family of Rhinocerotidae comprises of Five living Rhino Species. Two of these (Black and white Rhino) live in this side of the Sub-Sahara while their other three counterparts (Sumatra, Javan and the One-horned Rhinos) are found in Asia. Most importantly the Javan Rhino can only be Found in one National Park on the northern tip of Indonesian Island of Java. How do I know this, I read about it ๐Ÿ˜Š

Five Rhino Species

These ever blind yet alert, watchful and Simply Magical creatures may look strong and powerful but they are vulnerable and sensitive and sadly they continue to be prosecuted for their HORN with a crazy belief that Rhino horn can actually do a bunch of other stuff. Dear Poacher, Need I remind you that NO ONE, AND I MEAN ABSOLUTELY NOONE IN THE WORLD NEEDS A RHINO HORN BUT A RHINO.

Rhino Horn is Not For Sale!

As a result of illegal poaching and a massive threat from climate change, Rhino numbers have dropped from 70,000 by the 1970s to around 27,000 Rhinos in the World. What’s more, three of the Five Species (Black, Sumatra and Javan Rhinos) have been listed as Critically endangered while the others Greater One-horned Rhino as vulnerable and lastly the White rhinos which were once thought as extinct now thrive in private sanctuaries listed as Near threatened.
